Dr. Susan David |  Work Playlist

When our natural human responses to the trials and travails of work are recast as less than or weakness, it is to the detriment of all involved. Employees aren’t robots and will eventually burn out if treated this way. Our real world experience at work actually shows that those who model caring, authentic, and emotionally skilled behaviors are far more effective than those who don’t. We are all human. We all experience the same range of human emotions (and all benefit from being given the opportunity to effectively process them). Hurt, loneliness, rage, anxiety—they belong to our collective experience. Let’s reach out to each other from this place of commonality and understanding rather than creating more division in an already-polarized world.

The WHO Commission on Social Connection (2024–2026) aims to see the issue recognised and resourced as a global public health priority. The Commission will propose a global agenda on social connection, working with high-level Commissioners to make the case for action, marshal support to scale up proven solutions and measure progress. Start your journey to learn more about the issue by watching the Social Connection Series: a living collection of short films that features the lived experiences of people around the world on social connection. Sit down with us to listen to their stories and explore why social connection is central to our health, well-being, and to being human.

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) provides important protections for individuals with disabilities, including those with mental health conditions, in the workplace. Under the ADA, employers are required to provide reasonable accommodations to employees with qualifying mental health conditions, as long as it doesn’t cause undue hardship to the business. These accommodations might include flexible schedules, remote work options, modified job duties, or access to mental health resources. Additionally, the ADA prohibits discrimination based on mental health conditions in hiring, firing, promotions, and other employment practices. This ensures that employees with mental health conditions are treated fairly and have equal opportunities to succeed. By understanding and adhering to the ADA, workplaces can support employees’ mental well-being, foster inclusivity, and create environments where everyone can contribute to their full potential.
